Recap: Your Gen, November 16th 2010

On the last ‘regular’ episode of TAYG for 2010, Michael Veitch joined the Baby Boomers, Eddie Perfect was on team Gen X and Lucy McIntosh on Gen Y. Throughout the show, a Rupert Bear sat on Shaun’s desk. He claimed each team had won 8 episodes this year, but my count said X is up one.

Shaun wasn’t particularly convinced “he’s a funny guy” before strutting his stuff on the “catwalk.”

First up was Who Goes There?, aka Quo Vadis. The Camberwell Girls College Choir sung the introduction to What’s a Doodle Do? During the game, Shaun had to convince Josh that he liked him, but wasn’t very successful.

The four button choices consisted of Wistfulness, Enya, Gravity and Trust Me.

  • Gen X chose Gravity, playing Fallen Stars – matching the celebrity with the thing that brought them down. Charlie managed to convince Shaun to award a point for matching Fergie with money, even though “toe sucking” was the answer.
  • Gen Y picked Enya which was Name That Tune – all songs from movies.
  • The BB (unwisely?) decided on Trust Me, playing Porridgey-didge. Amanda volunteered to be the one held above the vat of porridge and due to a few poor answers, Amanda was due to be dropped in it. But she managed to hold on to the device and therefore was saved.

The Your Gen round was about a millionaire by-day, caped-crusader by-night: James Packer! No, Batman. In the end-game (worth half a million points) teams had to compete to see who was the best generation at landscaping. Shaun insisted you couldn’t have a garden without soil. Gen Y won the 2009 Australia and New Zealand Air Guitar Championships trophy, donated by Clay Connelly of Deer Park. This was even after the BB threatened to decapitate Rupert!

Bedtime Stories with Pate Biscuit

Every now and then, you come across something you didn’t expect. In my search to find a copy of ‘Smithereens’, which I thought was Shaun’s only other book, I found this:

Bedtime Stories with Pate Biscuit – Written by Glynn Nicholas and Shaun Micallef

The back cover reads:

Hello Children,  and welcome to Bedtime Stories. I hope you are well and haven’t been squashed by a semi-trailer. That wouldn’t be very much fun, would it? No, it certainly wouldn’t.
It would take hours to clean the tyres.

This is a very special book which I expect you to handle with great care. Inside these pages  there lives a world of intrigue and wonder – fairy tales, adventure stories, flights of the imagination, and most importantly, lots of bad taste, blood and guts.

All the stories have been specially selected by a panel of experts, consisting of ex-members of the Young Talent Team, various rockand roll performers, and celebrities from the commercial television networks. The experts were chosen for their sickening, vile, displeasing and repellent natures, although the lady from the “flying doctors” is very nice.

Happy Reading Children, be gracious and respect policemen.

Love Pate and Bongo

So there you go. It was published in 1990/1, so very much an early contribution from Mr Micallef.

Recap: Your Gen, November 9th 2010

Well this week, auctions speak louder than words as Josh stole Shaun’s opening monologue. This week guests were Glynn Nicholas for the Baby Boomers, Claudia Karvan for Generation X and Rai Thistlethwayte (from Thirsty Merc) for Gen Y.

The first game was Accessory Before The Fact, with Shaun remarking on the similarity of Angela Lansbury to Josh Thomas. Next, Bride of the Fly, where the groom in each photo had been replaced with a fly. The kettle was pulled out again for a round of As Quick As.

The four button options were Kim (Kardashian), Pencils, Breakfast Cereals and Ears.

  • Gen Y picked Ears – playing “Name That Tune”, all songs from musicals. Josh had a copy of Preincarnate on display, but it wasn’t mentioned.
  • The BB went for Pencils, which was “Draw That Movie!” Glynn drew for Amanda and all the titles had numbers in them.
  • Gen X chose Breakfast Cereals, with the game “What Am I Eating?”, during which Shaun ate a banana.

The Your Gen round topic was Weather. The end game envelope was delivered by Napoleon on a Segway – “Which Generation is Best at – Body Art?” A models had to be painted to suit a scene by each team – just a regular, every day activity! In the end, Gen X won with their Tarzan model, winning the 1934 Trophy for Best Novice Toy Dog, donated by Pepper in Gawler SA.

Guests for Your Gen, 9th & 16th November

On this week’s TAYG, Shaun and the team captains are joined by comedian Glynn Nicholas representing the Baby Boomers, actor Claudia Karvan (Gen X) and musician Rai Thistlewaite from Thirsty Merc (Gen Y). Glynn and Shaun have worked together previously, notably Shaun as a writer on “The Glynn Nicholas Show”. When Glynn passed on a second season, the ABC offered Shaun a show, which became “The Micallef P(r)ogram(me)”!

The following week, Michael Veitch will be on the Baby Boomers team, Offspring’s Eddie Perfect on team Generation X and model Lucy McIntosh for Generation Y.

Another conversation with Shaun

Shaun spent an hour talking with Richard Fidler last Monday on 612 ABC Brisbane. They talked about Shaun’s influences, specifically Cook and Moore (playing 2 of their sketches), talked about how his career came to comedy and the creation of The Micallef P(r)ogram(me). Strangely, little mention about the new book. Definitely worth a listen for any fan.

Thanks to Lucy for the info!

(PS. The parliament sketch played during the show is one of my favourites!)

Recap: Your Gen, November 2nd 2010

Charlie and Amanda began with a game of Snakes and Ladders before Shaun introduced the guests: HG Nelson for the Baby Boomers, Chrissie Swan for Gen X and Tim Blackwell for Gen Y.

The games played were:

  • Name That Tee
  • Going Somewhere Solo (Gotto Bollo Solo?!) – where solo artists had to be identified, along with the band that made them famous
  • Chicken or Egg? – determining which came first, such as KFC or McDonalds

Did you know 2010 was International Deadly Snake Month? So was the 4 button options: Jules Lund, Indian Taipan, Godman’s Pitviper and The Banded Krait.

  • The Baby Boomers picked The Banded Krait, which was Who Said That?
  • Next was Gen X, with Chrissie choosing the Indian Taipan and playing Third Drawer Down.
  • Gen Y went for the Pitviper, which was 7 Degrees.

The YourGen round was “Dust and Dirt”. Mr Spock, being attacked by a woodpecker, delivered the end game envelope – proclaiming the challenge as “Which is the Best Generation at Coming Home Late”. The teams had to complete a number of “before bed” challenges in a pitch-black house, being as quiet and quick as possible. Shaun watched, then walked in as they popped into bed.

Gen Y won the 1956 Bank Officials Association Table Tennis Trophy, donated by Shaun’s mother!

As a side note, the home viewer question was inaccurate – The Titanic was found in 1985. Yes, I’m also a Titanic nerd!
